Samsung  and LG said Tuesday they would end all existing legal disputes, bringing a measure of peace to two of South Korea’s best-known conglomerates, who have spent years slinging mud at one another even as they have built global empires.

As some of you surely remember, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have been involved in a rather colorful dispute over alleged vandalism. The story involved LG appliances chief Jo Seong-jin, who was accused of orchestrating the deliberate damaging of several high-end Samsung washing machines by LG employees at two retail stores in Germany last September.

South Korean prosecutors raided LG’s Seoul headquarters in December and probed the company’s top executives including Jo Seong-jin, the head of the home appliance division. In defense, LG released last month video footage of Jo testing different Samsung Machines displayed in stores, claiming it was not a move to harm but a regular practice to test the rival’s products.

this isn't the companies first truce, however, and that might temper expectations for success. As recently as September 2013, Samsung Display and LG Display agreed to end all courtroom battles over display technology and consider cooperation, calling the bickering between the two companies “exhausting.”

But that didn’t stop the relationship from souring again. In February, LG Display and Samsung Display exchanged a series of news releases, trading allegations over information leakages. Samsung Display said it felt “extremely regretful” about LG Display’s claims, which it called “appalling.”
